Tranquility

Women are still not able to open up about abuse and about issues they have faced. Their voices are still suppressed by society, their community, and even by their own family. They still must cover their bruises with makeup, and plaster smiles across their faces. This fakeness is manifested in the Barbie doll. The Barbie doll is popular among young girls. The doll resembles a conventionally attractive and unintelligent young woman. Her smiling expression doesn’t change in any situation. Barbie and her unchanging expression reveal how women must carry themselves in our society. The plastic fakeness of Barbie can be compared with that of women who have to hide their suffering and smile in order to survive in this patriarchal society.
