Jigu Chhen

One of the most spectacular architectural designs in the Kathmandu valley is the Newari house. With its torans and tundals and the complex patterns on its windows and doors, the Newari house is unique and beautiful and has always captivated me. I have always wondered what it would feel like to call this remarkable architecture my home and long dreamed of living in one. I have lived in Kathmandu my entire life, during which time I have seen a lot of those ancient traditional houses being slowly replaced by newer buildings. The Newari residence has become the most vulnerable of all Newari structures. ‘Jigu Chhen’ is a card game created to entertain the younger generations while teaching them about their history and culture, which is at risk of being forgotten. In this card game, players compete to construct a Newari home of their own.
